I saw this idea on another blog and thought that I would try something different. While the original ikea hack was to create something quite modern, my idea was to use the distressed finish:

Before (just boring old cheap looking pine):
After (distressed in french grey with new knobs and voila.... two very
useful and pretty side tables):
